During emergency vehicle operations, why is situational awareness critical?

Situational awareness is essential in emergency vehicle operations because it enables operators to perceive, comprehend, and anticipate events in their environment. In dynamic situations, the conditions can change rapidly due to various factors such as road conditions, the behavior of other drivers, and the presence of pedestrians. By maintaining a high level of situational awareness, operators can make informed decisions, execute quick maneuvers, and respond to potential hazards effectively.

Being aware of one's surroundings means recognizing things like the position of other vehicles, traffic signals, and road signs, as well as understanding how these elements may change. This awareness allows the operator to prioritize safety, not only for themselves and their crew but also for the public.
